You really dont watch do you, in the show Lex has always been one of Clark's best friend. But he still isnt to be trusted.
And this is one of the first times Clark couldnt save the person in the end.

Smallville Summary:
The show follows the young Clark Kent(Superman for morons) starting in his freshman year in highschool. In the first episode Clark saves LEx after Lex drives off a bridge. They become friends though LEx always suspected something wasnt right because he knows he hit Clark at 60mph. This season they introduced Lois into the mix. IN seasons 2 and 3 Christopher Reeves actually made a few appearences as the man who tells Clark of his origins. His appearances where kinda like a passing of the cape kind of thing.
So to wrap up...Watch Smallville Underlings!!!
