You got half of the answer but th rest is. It initally cost to much to make the deloren and it cost ore to ship them because they weight a shit load they were to heavy and not fast enough for the time.

I drove a Delorean a couple months ago it had power but no pick up and didn't handle very well. Not worth the 25K sticker price they had on it. I just had to drive it how often do you get a chance to drive a car like that.

they did shoot with him, but to save money they had to "shoot over" the scenes with Michael J. Fox, there's so many bloopers, try looking at the "alien from space invading marty's dad who has a hairdryer in his belt" ... his hairdryer disappears between instant cuts!
