How did Luke know

Okay in episodeV Luke looses his lightsaber. Well in episodeVI Luke has a new lightsaber. Now i thought there was only one place to make lightsabers(Planet Elam)So how did Luke know about this place without Yoda or Obi-Wan telling him.

It's actually Yoda's old saber. Everything and everyone was a lot bigger before the Empire came to power.

Seriously though, it's explained in the "Shadows of the Empire" EU novel that takes place between episodes 5 and 6. Kenobi supposedly has some raw materials and manuals in his hut, hidden so only Luke can find them. So Luke builds a new one there.

It's been a while since I read the book. He either found materials and a crystal, or materials and an artificial crystal, or even materials to create an artificial crystal. Neither makes much difference to me. He didn't go to Ilum, that's the point. 🙂

It's been about 20 years since I read the book, but it's like the first paragraph, I think. Right at the beginning, anyhow.

That scene appeared in the radio version, actually.

All that said, the films have never had anyhting to say about where sabres are made or how difficult it is.

He could have took the old one to bits (the one he had in IV to V) and studied it and built many more before the start of empire! unless Lucas says so... it aint so!!

About the artificial crystal - that was made up to explain why Luke's saber was green.

Rememeber, this was back at the time when Luke had the ONLY green saber, and people assumed he was the first to have a green saber, because the older sabers were blue. This was disproved with the prequels, which show us that green is as natural as blue.

It's something I don't like, because I was personally looking forward to seeing all blue sabers in the prequels, and I like the fact Luke had the only green saber - but it isn't the way things turned out so what can ya do eh?

We don't even know if sabers even use crystals, as far as canon explanations go.

The only fact about lightsabers is that they are silver tubes with glowy energy blades, and that's about it.

We can only assume Luke constructed his saber with his 1337 skillz. Simple as that really.
