supposed to be soprano but we desperately needed altos so i volunteered to be an alto this year😄

Sopranos are the more penetrating are they not 😛 When a soprano is in unison with an alto and a bass the soprano is the one heard.

yes but it's the alto who puts everything together...if you just have a soprano and a bass singing it sounds crappy until the alto sings the melody

Does the orchestra have the singing in conjunction with other instruments or on its own?

just the instruments on it's own but sometimes the concert band has the vocal ensemble singing with them...only for certain songs though
