No, Obsidian did not have a ring, but had some weird inherent shadow powers. Scott was his father and his mother was the Thorn, a villain from the 50s. He is the fraternal twin of the super-heroine Jade. Jade and Obsidian recieved their powers because of their parents altered genetics. Thorn had been givin powers via some weird jungle venom, and constant exposure to the Starheart had, unbeknownst to him at the time, mutated and infused Alan Scott with its energies, internalizing his powers, thus making it able for him to pass them down via genetics.
He's Jade's sister--and whereas she has some starheart-ish abilities, Obsidian's vary.
