OK this might seem like a stupid question but countdown, death of the new gods, and final crisis all seem to have different stories about how the new gods fell and how darkseid came to power. which is the correct story, and which story was retconned?
oddly enough, the 'trilogy' you mentioned all seem to tie-in to one another [sorta kinda]... you just have to piece certain things together for it to start making sense.
first off, lets start with a "final crisis prologue/synopsis", written by grant himself:
here, grant tells us that the source being is composed of both good and evil, life and anti-life, yin and yang, etc. he also talks about the death of all new gods, then goes on to mention the war in heaven/subsequent fall of darkseid... which were all shown, and/or transpired during, "DotNG" [so that series must be somewhat canonical.]
----
that said, after darkseid obtains the power of all new gods and begins to battle the source being during "DotNG", he [the SB] plays his trump card [ie. orion.] after darkseid and orion duke it out for a while, darkseid flees and supes is told that orion will be dispatched to "deal with darkseid":
----
backtrack to "countdown", and orion mysteriously boom tubes in, and battles darkseid for the final time... the battle ends with orion ripping darkseid's 'heart' out:
though neither of them were amped during the above battle [as they were in "DotNG"], it's like i said before - you have to piece certain parts of these happenings together for the big picture to make sense.
----
the above instance also goes hand in hand with darkseid saying, "there is a black hole where my heart should be":
"FC" #7.
----
and ripping his 'heart' out is how orion must have "wounded darkseid beyond repair", and caused him to "fall":
as that is the only way to kill a new god.
----
after the battle between them in "countdown", we see a wounded orion [still in the city where he and darkseid battled], staggering away:
----
fast forward to "FC", and where does turpin find a dying orion?:
[hint]in a city[/hint]
----
imo, after darkseid was reincarnated during "seven soldiers/FC" he wanted to make sure, without a doubt, that orion was killed and not just wounded *enter him shooting the radion bullet backwards in time*
sorry about the lengthy response, but yours is a question i've seen asked several times, so i wanted to take some time to thoroughly answer it.
