Thoughts on dubbed anime

Why not what? WHy can't I watch it on tv? Cuz I dont' get any channels other than local ones. We don't pay for tv muahahahha....Foreign concept huh?

Actually, if you watch a dubbed anime on DVD, it will be the same edited version they show on TV.

No, if that was the case there would be no blood or anything in anime. No swearing etc. And there is. They edit for tv. They dub it for us to watch. There is a difference

They don't need to edit it don't they understand that. Somone should right a letter or something.

Very few DVD dubs are actually unedited.

What ones are you talking about that are edited while being dubbed?

I have imported anime and the anime is just the same as it is after the companies dub it here in the US (or wherever).

So, I really have to disagree with you....

ALL dubbed anime is edited. Just the process of dubbing itself is editing, they're editing in new voices.

If it's an anime that's never going to be shown on TV, then the dubs will not have scenes edited out. If it's one that will be shown on TV, then the dubs on the DVD will be the same edited version shown on TV.

I got all the Azumanga Daioh DVDs and as far as I can tell the dub is perfect on it. I also like the booklet they give with it to explain things in the show rather than taking them out.

Azumanga Daioh is awesome. But it also proves my point -- it was dubbed in the US with the intentions of never being shown on TV (unless you get the Anime Network, where they show both dubbed and subtitled anime).

Your point is only the anime that is going to be shown on tv is edited during the dubbing proccess?

All others are dubbed without editing? (And I know you said dubbing is editing...so disgreguard that). This still proves my point then. *grin*

Plus you can get the unedit versions of it as well...

No, not all others are dubbed without editing. Most are still edited, but there are some (Azumanga Daioh as an example) where the dubs don't have anything changed.

And most of the time you cannot get uncut versions, the DVD is what you get and that's it.

Then Look at 4kids and you will NEVER see the real versions of things like One Piece Tokyo Mew Mew and such.Heck a whole other company had to get the rights to give us the REAL version of Card Captor Sakura and they simply arent give us anything like that themseves

I like to switch back and forth between Japanese and English dialogue. But, depending on how awake I am, I usually end up watching it in English with subtitles so I can compare the differences in dialogue.

Dubbing it makes it less work to watch anime (you can watch the show without having to worry about reading subtitles), but it's not always accurate, which is why I like reading the subtitles. And I also like to listen to the Japanese version so I can hear how the voices originally sounded.

Dubbing is alright, but if I had it my way, I would always watch it in Japanese with subtitles, which is what I do on my DVDs. Dubbing, at least, on my DVDs, takes away some dialouge and little scenes, but nothing major.

Some companies do horrible dubbing, like 4kids. Especially if you look at the older animes. Sailor Moon was definitely dubbed incorrectly.

Dubbing is okay in some places, but extremely wrong in others, again, depending on who's doing it. As for voices, sometimes if you're accostomed to hearing the English voices the Japanese ones sound horrible for that character, and sometimes it's not the language they're speaking but how the actor is portraying the character and speaking the lines.

And, looking back over the forum, Evilcap was totally right.

i dont mine dubbed anime, a living in america...that's basically all they show on tv unless u go and find it for yourself. now i havent seen a lot of anime in japanese, but so far the ones that i have seen, i perfure them better [i.e. the db/dbz/dbgt series]. or even if i just go out and buy a series/movie myself i perfure that b/c they dont change things or take stuff out [language, blood, nudity, etc.]. when they start changing the show, thats when i dont like it. but other than that, i could care less if the show is in english or if im reading sub-titles....hey it helps me work on my japanese [lol].
