I have kids, and they can be noisy so the captions come in handy. I also use them when I have to keep the volume down due to the kids sleeping.
More to the point though, when using the captions, do you find that you spend more time reading the words then watching the movie? I turned on the captions to Fellowship of the Rings the other night (durning the scene at Rivendell), mostly because they were talking soft and the kids were asleep. After a while I realized the I barely new where they were because I was watching the bottom of the screen instead of the movie itself.

yeah - i know that feeling!!
completely opposite to watching a film with credits, i sometimes play the sound through the speakers and turn the telly off, so i can go round the house listening to the film!
it works really well cos i know all my films so well!
