Because in the land of the free, the rights of a minority are not up for a majority vote.
Nice one AP and jm the US is a REPRESENTATIVE democracy, the voters elect the politicians and the politicians run the country. Direct democracy is very hard to establish and also has a lot of flaws. As AP said in a direct democracy the rights of a minority can get trampled upon by 'a majority' Unless you make voting mandatory (which I doubt will ever happen in the US) the turn out will probably be pretty low, which would make the matter even worse.

I understand your point, and for once it seems that SOME logic went into your argument..so let me spare the insult, and just ask you straight out:
How is a ceremony more important than a human being ?
To say that Gays should not marry each other, is the same thing as saying that the "Sanctity of Marriage" is more important than the Gay person who wants it, so important that the Gay man or woman cannot use it in thier way, cannot make it part of thier own, and can only have it if they live the "straight" lifestyle.
Is the concept of Marriage THAT valuable, that its value is worth more than the happiness of an individual human being?
Especially considering, that by allowing Gay Marriage, you are hurting NO ONE
