Sufjan Stevens
He's the next indie sensation. A great songwriter, clever, and he even has a nice gimmick:
He's making an album about all 50 states in the US. At least he says he's going to. So far, he's recorded "Say Yes! To Michigan!" and "Come On Feel the Illinoise!" about his homestate of Michigan and their midwest compatriot Illinois. Not only is he prolific (he sandwiched another album in between the 2003 Michigan album and this year's Illinois tribute) but he also has a penchant for long song titles. Some examples from the Illinois album:
"The Black Hawk War, or, How to Demolish an Entire Civilization and Still Feel Good About Yourself in the Morning, or, We Apologize for the Inconvenience But You're Going to Have to Leave Now, or, 'I have fought the Big Knives and will continue to fight them until they are off our lands!'"
"Let's Hear That String Part Again, Because I Don't Think They Heard It All the Way Out in Bushnell"
and some more. After listening to Illinois, my only regret was that he would probably relegate New Mexico to an EP even if he ever got that far.
