horcruxes are an attempt to become immortal by splitting the soul into pieces and placing the piece into and object or person. by doing this a piece of you is alive even if you are "killed", this is prbly the reason why voldemort wasnt killed when he tried to kill harry when he wwas a baby

adding to what mr. bacon said.....you can split your soul by killing many people "killing rips the soul apart"
