And people usually use that style for icons and stuff, you see it all over livejournal. It's so easy but looks nice.

You can make some cool effects with it if you do the exclusion layer, and then a few layers filled with various colors set to Soft Light, and then Apply Image and set that to Multiply or one of the Burns or Overlay.
