WHAT KIND OF SIG?
Sporting goods stores once didn't have Michael Vick jerseys because they flew off the shelves. Now, they don't have them, most likely for a far different reason.
Multiple metro Atlanta locations of sporting goods retailers Dick's Sporting Goods and Sports Authority contacted Friday said they are not carrying them. Employees declined to answer whether the jerseys have been pulled, referring questions to their respective corporate offices. Calls seeking comment to Dick's and the Sports Authority main offices were not immediately returned.
That his jerseys are not for sale seems to be further indication of Vick's declining public standing in the wake of the federal charges that he faces for dogfighting. Vick entered a plea of not guilty Thursday at a federal courthouse in Richmond, Va.
Further, the NFL's merchandise Web site sells Falcons jerseys for players no longer on the team, but not for the player whose jersey was the league's top seller in 2002.
While jerseys for ex-Falcons players such as Patrick Kerney and T.J. Duckett, along with current stars like Alge Crumpler and DeAngelo Hall, are on the nflshop.com Web site, Vick's No. 7 jersey is not for sale. Even if a fan tries to purchase a Vick jersey using the customized jersey function, the Web site prohibits it.
An attempt to enter "Vick" and "7" prompts a message that "Your current entry cannot be processed. Some entries are prohibited due to guidelines for past and present player names. Please create a new entry."
Among the Web site's rules for jersey customization is that "league player names must match current team rosters and the team for which they currently play." Monday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell ordered Vick to stay away from the team's training camp until the league reviewed the charges filed against him.
Vick jerseys are still for sale at Champs Sports stores and also at the team's Falcons 365 locations
