I a lot of people here are trendies. A few good makers come up with ideas and then they filter down. I leads ot lack of creativity and originality. I personally don't like it.

I have a different point of view: I don't feel that Ken, Lana, Barker or Digi are trying to copy the Mario sig idea. They are just having fun using sprites and as Lana stated that is not a new concept anyway. Here in KMC sometimes we make fun of each other "copying" sigs or putting references but always for fun and in a friendly way.

Personally, I made one in that style because I was intrigued by the challenge, and wanted to see if I could make one comparable to masters like TOH and Lance.
Most of my sigs are original designs. In fact, almost all of them are, and nearly everyone here can say the same about their sigs. If I ever copy and idea off of someone, it's intended solely as a compliment, and I have reasons for doing it beyond the creativity...I'm well aware that it's not original (as is anyone who follows a trend) but want to try it anyway.
And honestly, I think it shouldn't be that big of a deal. It's obvious which sig-makers have the most talent and/or creativity. That comes through naturally, regardless of how many people copy someone else.
I won't be copying anything for a while now, since I see it can be a touchy subject. I respect that, since I realize many sig-makers take great pride in their work and don't appreciate copies, but (and I think I speak more more than just myself) it was never intended as anything other than a fun experiment and a compliment to those who preceded me.

Oh, I know that. Its just that, i don't know, I feel that there is one style of sig that is popular at the moment and people aren't open to new interpretations of how to make sigs.
When I make a sig, I want people to see it and know..."Alliance made that," just by the style itself. No one is certainly wrong to emulate a sig and learn new techniques, it just gets annoying when its what everyone uses and its the only style they accept. I just see where Lance is coming from, but I don't totally agree with him.

Hell, you could take it a step further. Igor Stravinsky once said something to the effect of "All great art is plagiarized". He included himself in that statement, and said the last 'original' composer was Bach...everyone else was just copying and revising him.
In any case, I like to think that we all draw inspiration and ideas from each other, even if it's not completely obvious. And the effect is one where we all improve because of it.

I look at many areas of art (including signatures) as a sort of symbiotic relationship. Every maker looks to another for inspiration, tips, whatever, and maybe that maker looks to somebody else and that maker looks back to.
