Psylocke’s past is one of the more confusing of the X-Men characters. Her real name is Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock and Psylocke is her codename. Betsy’s life started in the Braddock Manor where her father, Dr. James Braddock, and her mother, Elizabeth Braddock, raised her, her twin brother Brian, and Jamie the eldest. Her father was sent from another dimension to father the champion, Captain Britain. Her parents were killed in an explosion of one of her father’s experiments.
After their parents death Brian eventually became Captain Britain, which he left for a period when a group known as RCX attempted to recruit him and have him exploit his government. Betsy was a member of STRIKE, a British division of the international law enforcement agency SHIELD. There she developed her psychic powers and she also had a career as a model that was pretty successful.
When her brother stopped being Captain Britain RCX agents then persuaded Betsy to become the new Captain Britain. She was trained by Captain UK, a hero from another dimension. As the new Captain Britain Psylocke had to go up against Slaymaster who , in a heated battle, severely beat Psylocke and blinded her. Brain heard the psychic cries of his sister and came to her rescue, taking back his position of Captain Britain.
While recuperating in Switzerland, she was taken prisoner by the other-dimensional creature known as Mojo. Mojo gave Psylocke artificial eyes and took control of her. Soon Psylocke was rescued by the New Mutants, a team of adolescent mutants, who helped her regain her free will. Psylocke decided to stay with the New Mutants in Professor Xavier’s mansion that also served as the headquarters for the X-Men.
After aiding the X-Men in a battle against Sabretooth (who had broken into the mansion) she proved herself to the X-Men and was accepted into the group where she fell in love with the X-Man, Angel.
Later, in an attempt to save his lover, the assassin Kwannon, the crimelord Matsu’o Tsurayaba captured Psylocke. Tsurayaba managed to switch the minds of the two women so that the mind of Betsy was now in Kwannon’s body and visa versa. In the process their minds melded so now they both had the same memories and telepathic abilities.
Psylocke was then brainwashed and turned over to Mandarin whom she served as Lady Mandarin. This was only for a breif period before Psylocke regained her free will and returned to the X-Men. Kwannon soon became an ally of the X-Men calling herself Revanche. The X-Men were never really sure who the “real” Psylocke was however. Finally Revanche learned that she was infected with the Legacy Virus and Tsurayaba killed her.
Later, Psylocke, Storm, Cannonball, Wolverine, and the three new members were lured to a so-called god named Ananasi, who turned out to be the Shadow King. Psylocke battled him in the Astral plain only to be tricked into freeing the Shadow King from his prison. This set off something called a Radical Psionic Event, which took the powers of all the telepaths on earth, and made all the normal humans go mad. Her mind was in pieces but the energies of the Crimson Dawn saved her life. In her new astral form, Psylocke freed Storm and separated herself and the Shadowking from the others. With the last of her telepathy, she trapped his nexus (psionic equivalent of a soul) and left the astral plain for the last time. She still has her shadow powers, but it's not sure whether she'll stay on the team.
