Well....on the set of the films, the hobbits (spec. Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan) invented a fake poking-game which included a series of "tags," "tigs" and "togs." This thread (and its predecessors) were named in honour of the fake game. The full story can be heard/seen in the behind-the-scenes of The Fellowship Of The Ring: Extended Edition. 😉

I'm not sure when they talk about it....maybe during both the commentary and the footage, or only in one....

By the way, just out of interest... How long have these threads been around for. Someone told me they opened 6 months after RotK was released. I guess I'm too lazy to look it up. Anyone know, or have any idea?

The tigs have been open since the FotR: SE was released on DVD.... 😉
