what kind of upgrades have been made on IM's armor since his classical days(like around 1975), besides extremis of course? is it composed of new material now?

He's built armors out of several materials, including, but not limited to, titanium, adamantium/vibranium, promethium, SKIN tech, etc.

what is his primary suit made out of as of now? is it different from the original?

Last I heard the Primary Suit is made out of Crystallized Iron matrix, "molecularly aligned" over other metals like Titanium.
