Jean works for the Crown which is where gods consciousness lies. Jean is directed as you can see by a computer like voice (reference the omega point theory) which is suggested to be Gods voice. Jeans power derives from the Crown as stated in the comic. This power from the crown is referred to as the phoenix consciousness.
Theres no denying a connection between Jean and the supreme being of marvel.

Jean isnt a host and never has been. She's an avatar with a genetic connection to the force. Its within her genes to wield the power. Rachel is a host for the power. You're not understanding. Being able to tap into the force is part of Jeans mutation.
Your grasp of the phoenix concept is outdated. Phoenix isnt an entity as per current continuity. Its just the power of creation, an energy source. Jeans powers allow her to tap this energy reservoir whick makes her a phoenix. Jean is Phoenix. The energy sig is just a physical manifestation of her powers. Its not sentient. That is current continuity.
So it would seem genetically gene is the best around. That swhy she's referred to on numerous occassions as the ultimate mutation.
Just look at what her genes can help produce. Rachel Summers(Phoenix 2 who's own genes help produce Hyperstorm) Cable, Xman and so on.
Tapping into the phoenix force is her mutation. Phoenix force isnt a sentient being. That idea hasnt been continuity for 3 years

That was a shard of Jeans phoenix essence. It was just a part of Jeans consciousness which got seperated from Jean as her consciousness was reforming in the white hot room. Thats why it was confused. Thats why at the end Jean ripped it from Emma and took it into herself.
That was basically cementing the new phoenix retcon as current continuity. It supported the idea that phoenix was Jean not a seperate entity. The phoenix force is just the power of creation derived from the crown that those with phoenix potential in their genes can tap into. The avatars are the phoenixes. The energy bird is just a manifestation of their power and it symbolises their rebirth into higher beings.
If you read Endsong you should know Jean and Phoenix are one in the same.
