Common

I've been trying to listen to some more hip-hop lately.

I heard Common is one of the best, so where's a good place to start with him? Album-wise?

Oh, and I also heard good things about Mos Def...what are some good albums by him?

Hell, anyone have any more recommendations about anyone?

Common is cool, I've only heard Resurrection but that was a good album. Mos Def is great, Black on both sides would be a great purchase. Some others you might like to check out are:
Blackalicious
Brother Ali
Eyedea & Abilities
Qwel
Jurassic 5
There are others like Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, Illogic and MF Doom that i love but might be a bit harder to get into if hip hop's not your usual thing.
If you like Hardcore hip hop with brutal vivid lyrics then you could check out Jedi Mind Tricks, Canibus and Immortal Technique.
Hope that helps man.

I suggest his recent one, Be

Im sure when Dr Octagon and Eraserhead see the title of this thread they'll be able to offer a very comprehensive selection of what to check out. Most of the recent hip hop I've been listening to has been suggested by them and Deathblow and they have yet to fail me.............yet. 😖hifty:

If ur just getting into hip-hop i'd start off with the closer to mainstream/mainstream stuff like mos def. The albums you should get are:

Mos Def: Black on both sides
Talib Kweli: Reflection Eternal, Quality, and The Beautiful Struggle
Blackstar (Mos def & Talib Kweli): Self Titled
Nas: Illmatic

Yeah that BlackStar album is awesome. Hows it goin 113?

Be is the best album of the year (any genre) so far

"Be" is currently the best album this year in my opinion, even though i thought Kanye kinda ruined with his rhymes.

check out

Common- One Day It'll All Make Sense

great album 👆

also:

Mos Def- Black on Both Sides

I'd rank Common's albums in this order:

Resurrection
One Day It'll All Make Sense
Like Water For Chocolate
Be
Can I Borrow A Dollar?
Electric Circus

That being said, I think you should start with Like Water For Chocolate and/or Be.

If you like what you hear, move directly to Resurrection.

The Black Star (Mos Def and Talib Kweli) album is a great suggestion. Although I think you'd probably enjoy Kweli's Train of Thought right off the bat more so than BOBS. More accessible in my opinion. But they're all good albums so you can't really go wrong.

And if you like all this stuff, try The Roots, Tre Hardson, The Pharcyde and Zion I, they all have the same kind of organic, soulful sound. Also all nicely accesible groups.

^great suggestions. The Roots are a great place to start and, along with Mos Def, is where people usually get started.

Man, I've given up all hope for a Fatlip LP. I guess I'll have to do with the singles I have 🙁

is "be" really that good? ...cause everyones been raving about the album, i just thought people were getting caught up in the hype...i've downloaded a few tracks from it but i wasn't like blown away or anything.

thanks alot of the feedback guys, I appreciate it

anyone like Outkast?

I like Outkast's older stuff.

i also like the older outkast like ATLiens

I like BOB

My first encounter with "underground" hip hop was Third Eye Vision by Hieroglyphics, and it acted as a "gateway drug" to me, I instantly fell in love with it and wanted more, then I progressed to the more "harder stuff" witch are most of the artists you've guys already mentioned. So... yeah....I suggest checking out "Third Eye Vision" for starters.

This question is for everyone. How did you guys first discover "underground" hip-hop? What album, what's your story?

I got into Wu Tang, and from there I got into other Underground rappers

Chino XL was the first underground mc i heard about.

I listened to Tupac- Hit Em Up and i remember him saying "**** Chino XL"

i asked my friends who Chino XL was and they said it was a Japanese gang...😐

5 minutes passed, i check out Here To Save You All and it became one of my favorite albums...afterwards i listened to Ras Kass cuz of the track "Riiiot" and the cycle went on...

If you can class groups like PE, BDP, Cube, EMPD, Kane and such as underground back in the 80's then that's where it started for me. I was at school in England at the time and the only radio station that used to play good hip hop was a pirate station that i stumbled upon one night. From there i used to write down the songs i liked and spend the rest of the weekend in record shops looking for them (remember the Internet wasn't around then). As a result of these i've got some great old skool vinyl from the groups i already mentioned.
I kind of got lazy after i left school and didnt try too hard to find the good hip hop and to be fair i started listening to alot of other music instead. It wasnt till i came across KMC that i was introduced to the wealth of great underground hip hop thats still out there, the Internet certainly makes finding the music alot easier especially as i am probably the only person in New Zealand who listens to underground and there is no way i could find these artists in the local music store.
