Here's a question. When the One Ring was cut from Sauron's hand his body was destroyed but his spirit lived on in the One Ring...correct? Here's a question...why was Sauron's body destroyed when the One Ring was cut from him? Was it because he fused his spirit into it and could not stay as one without it? Help me out here.

yes. he needs the one ring to become whole again. why else do you think hes looking for it through the whole story? cuz it looks pretty on his big finger?

He was hole before he made the ring. His body was destroyed when it was cut from his finger. Why is that?

because when he made the ring, he poured into it i would say "half" of his soul, his being, his life-force, so that he could control all the other rings of power. thats why its the most powerful ring in the world. then when it was cut from his finger, half of his lifeforce was now gone from him, so he could not take physicl form until he regains the ring back. hes only "half" of his former self. its like this, we are made of of 2 things: body and spirit. if you take the spirit away, your left with just a body. if you take the body away, you have just the spirit. thats kinda how i think it works in saurons case.

It should be noted that the books are far more vague about that subject, however. It is not expressly stated that it was losing the Ring that 'killed' Sauron, merely that a. Ssuron was thrown down, b. Isildur cut the ring from his finger, and c. Sauron fled his body. The chronology and connection of the events is not plain.

remember also that Sauron didn't actually have a body to start with. He simply 'made' one to be on middle earth. Just like other Maiar that were there, they took the FORM of a creature( ie man or elflike).

So if he put more of his spirit within or to be connected with the ring, he wouldn't have enough energy to keep that body he had in tack. well thats my impression. Dont kill me if I'm wrong.

it is actually quite an interestin concept, which again is not tackled very well in the movie - someone who had not read the books before would probably think that Sauron is some kind of wizard who sits in his tower and uses the 'huge eye' ;-) to observe what's happening, whereas in fact it is just his essence or spirit that drives all the developments in all three books...

saurons eye in the movies as well isnt just "sitting on top of baradur", its watching everything thats going on FROM baradur. his spirit is still being in other places.

not so sure about the spirit being present everywhere - you seem to be making him a god-like being. true, the fear of him is present everywhere, but if he HIMSELF was everywhere then surely the Fellowship, especially Frodo and Sam on their journey, would have been discovered before they got even to Mordor...

The Elves hid the three rings. The rings of men turned them to ringwraiths so either they had them or Sauron did the the Dwarven rings were scatterd...some lost and some Sauron had.

Tolkien essentially admits in his correspondance that Sauron indeed had a physical body... it took a long time to regenerate one but he did have one at the time of LOTR.

they even elude to it... Why does Aragorn taunt Sauron to face him in battle if Aragorn knew Sauron didnt physically exist?

verdict = Sauron had a physical body, Tolkien said so...

I think you're right. Sauron was named The Necromancer that hid south of Mirkwood forest, before coming back to Mordor. Gandalf, Anragorn and others chased him and forced him to retreat to Bara-Dûr.

No no no no. Sauron's body wasn't destroyed after the ring was cut of. I'll explain his story quickly. For more details, pm me.

1. Sauron made the rings including the One, in which he poured half his strenght and spirit into it. While doing that, he had a perfect body, that could shapeshift to anything. Sauron was considered to be one of the most beautiful being on earth (physically of course).

2. He left the ring in Mordor and went to corrupt the spirits of Numenoriens. He was so good looking they didn't know he was evil. Together, Numenoriens (except Isildur, his father Elendil and some numenoriens who still had faith towards the Valars) and Sauron marched against the undying lands and the gods for control over Valinor.

3. Iluvatar didn't allow it and he destroyed Numenor, sank all their battle ships and for those who made it on the undying lands, he made the mountains fall over them and trapped them forever (until they died).

4. Sauron didn't want to spend the rest of eternity there, so he seperated his spirit from his perfect body (killing it in the process) and his spirit escaped, to fusion later with the One ring. That his why we cannot consider the body we saw in the movie to be his real body. It was just the physical form of his spirit, only possible while having the connection with the One ring.

5. When the ring was cut from his finger, the connexion vanished and Sauron couldn't keep his physical form and it just got destroyed . His spirit was still there thought, weakened but still existed because of the ring who was not destroyed. /scene (Lotr) 🙂

He certainly wasn't physical as the Necromancer at Dol Guldur; Gandalf clearly states that he uncovered that Sauron was still in the process of taking form at the time.

Yeah. Now that I think about it, wasn't the Necromancer a spirit who brought darkness to the environment and just killed whatever came close to him? (I think Mirkwood's darkness vanishe dafter Necro left).
