I guess they buy into the "knowledge is power" line of thought and feeling that they 'know' these secrets affords them some sort of power.
It's sad though because these people can never really affect change in the real world because of their involvement and investment in a fabricated and fictional world.

Slight problem in logic here, I believe that Sparticus was at large before Augustus came to power therefore by the time he did the Illuminati (or whomever it was/is) would be in control of him and all subsequent Emperors! Concluding they RULED the world so their mission was accomplished.
