Now, there's a real mature thought. 😕

As I've reiterated use the puppet for the closeups and digital one when necessary; they did just that in "Menace," they should have just kept doing it! People hardly notice the digiyoda in "Menace!" But hey they don't listen to me, or you for that matter.
Look at all the physical things Yoda the puppet did in "Empire" & "Jedi":
- Crawl around Luke's camp, eating and grabbing things
- Whack Artoo with his gimmer stick
- Walk back to his hovel
- Make root leaf stew
- Ride along in Luke's backpack
- Pinch Luke
- Put his feet up and crawl into bed.If they did it in Empire, they could have done it in Eps II and III. (It probably would have been less expensive and taken less time.) Sure use digital for the Crouching Yoda Hidden Dragon bits.
I did some research and they did make a new mold for the TPM Yoda. That doesn't make it evil just different. The TPM Yoda's fine, wonderful in fact. I'll never forget the first time we saw him again! And how Lucas just drops us in the middle of the scene, without any stupid Fonzi or Kramer opener, it's fantastic.
Meh. The CGI to puppet to CGI to puppet transitions would be terribly obvious, because one moment Yoda is 'real' and the next he's not. It's easier with humans (and aliens) for CGI stuff, but Yoda? No. You can tell too easily which is puppet and which is CGI.
Plus, CGI Yoda does swordfighting and jumping and lightning-repulsion and all these things that it'd be awkward with a puppet.
By Attack Of The Clones, I would have liked if they mixed up puppetry with CGI when neccessary. But Yoda looked even better by ROTS, on a par or even better than Gollum. Looking at the PM puppet side by side, it's remarkable how strange he looks. I know they wanted to take some years off Yoda, but the CG Yoda looks exactly like the ESB and ROTJ Yoda. If they are indeed substituting him in, it's a good idea.
Frank Oz has been totally on side for this, I know. The work on ESB by him and his team was amazing but incredibly painstaking; likely Oz's greatest test as a puppeteer. I know Irvin Kershner groused and complained about everything it took to bring Yoda to life, must have been killer hours. I hope Oz knows all this CGI work is in respect to the character he created.
No, the cg yoda doesn't look anything like the TESB and ROTJ yoda, his face is too oblate, his ear wiggles look fake, his moves are computer-stiff, i.e to clean and perfect, the hair's wrong, the eyes are wrong, his mouth doesn't move just up and down but lips form words. (I loved it in ROTJ when Yoda says "already know you that which you need" in closeup, and Mr. Oz is must moving his thumb and forefinger apart and together.) At least they got the dubbing right in the last two. I still don't know how in TPM they got Jar Jar's voice synch wrong... he was computer generated, just go fix it!
