God gives it to us FREE when we place our faith in the COMPLETED work of Jesus Christ (on our behalf) as the SATISFACTION for our sins. He died as our SUBSTITUTE and took the punishment for our sins upon HIMSELF (even though He never sinned) and became our SACRIFICE to satisfy the righteousness required by God [1 John 2:2].
