i don't know for sure because it was left to the viewer's imagination whether Luke died or not...i personally think he did and he had to in order to inspire his fellow prisoners..because all in all Cool Hand Luke was an' allegory to the Jesus story with Luke posing as the savior and his inmates as the Acolytes..
