You're wrong about a few things. First of all, it was the most successful of the video game based movie. The previous shit storms being Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter. Both came out before Mortal Kombat. Also, I believe that the Liu Kang fight with Reptile was superior to the Cage/Scorpion fight.
Super Mario Bros. was a comedic relief compared to MK...at least it never took itself so seriously..
you may believe that but you're wrong...the Liu Kang/Reptile fight was okay (also done by that choreographer...who was none other than Robin Shou..the guy who plays Kang) but technically it is inferior to the Cage/Scorpion fight..

Either way, I prefer Mortal Kombat over Super Mario Bros. I prefer Mortal Kombat over every other video game movie. I think, for its time, it was great. Now, Annihilation, dumb as hell.
with "technically" i mean spoken from a martial artist's point of view..
well when i watched it way back then, i thought it was a disappointment..not as bad as Street Fighter but still..now we could discuss videogame-based movies all day...but let's just settle for nothing really good came out of that genre to this day..
