Like I said above, I don't think we know enough to make a conclusive opinion. But, based on what we know right now I feel that OB1 took up an obligation from his dieing master, and the fact that Anakin was so old is probably a afctor.

However, I have heard a lot of reports that Padmé will be a BIG factor in his fall, this could lead us to believe that maybe OB1 is not the big failure we may be thinking.
