A 13-year-old California girl sent 14,528 text messages last month, according to UPI.com. That breaks down to 484 text messages per day, or one every two minutes she was awake.
Luckily, the girl's parents had an unlimited texting plan so they were able to avoid a nearly $3,000 bill.
The girl's father said four of her friends -- all ages 12 or 13 -- were "obsessive texters." He has now placed restrictions on her cell phone use, banning texting after dinner.
The mental health community has yet to officially classify computer and/or cell phone overuse, but many believe that the pathological need to be connected might be more than psychological. An official diagnosis of obsessive text messaging and Internet addiction may not be far off.
Experts say that there are four distinct symptoms to diagnosing texting as a mental illness:
Excessive use (neglect day-to-day activities)
Withdrawal (feeling depressed when not accessible)
Tolerance (overtexting)
Negative repercussion (social isolation)
