Eh, I strongly disagree, maybe (maybe) at the very, very top end of money earning, but on the whole life is more livable and pleasant for Europeans in work than for their US American counterparts.

At any rate, I think xyz intends to return to schooling/working in the future, I don't see anything wrong with society supporting him in his time of troubles. tbh I think a social net (like good, free education, btw) is advantageous to a society as a whole.
