I've always been cautious of that since I was about 15. Think I saw a program about it and was all 'omg people do that?' So was always the one watching friends drinks etc and if it got left i'd buy a new one.
Also never let someone unknown buy you a drink and get it themselves, always oversee the purchase

or let them spike a whole bottle of vodka
i was at a friends when her friend came over after having a fight with her mum... we downed any hard liquors we could find or had bought and new comer had put some pills in her drink
she said something about fun as i left the room to go to the toilet and thats about it...
it was in my personal bottle of vodka
the night was great, even after how it turned out when she started vomiting and having a depressive episode
