jemaine clement made a comment about that on this podcast how the guy coming up with the word couldn't decide on a name and he went with aluminum first then the american dictionary published aluminum in it then he was like no no no it's aluminium which the uk dictionary adopted. i'm not gonna look into it at all, i'll just take his word for it!
