I guess it's a lot different in film and theatre because you play or write a character, whereas with stand-up and spoken word you're speaking directly to the audience, but either way the darker styles of comedy are usually sending some kind a personal message or outlook as well as aiming to amuse. Makes it richer overall and as you say a lot more relatable. I wish you luck for your future gigs majors
Yeah, with acting you can typically hide behind a character and be judged as a character. Otherwise, if someone doesn't like your performance, you can usually feel comfort by shifting the blame onto the writer, director, producer, editor, etc (not saying it's right, but it is a sense of coping with someone disliking you).
But with stand up, the audience is judging YOU and the material YOU have written. If they aren't pleased by your performance, they simply don't like you, specifically. It can be really rough. I've definitely bombed several times and THAT feels like the biggest walk of shame ever. But ya gotta take a risk. Otherwise, how are you being different, new, or interesting?
Thanks for the luck, sending it your way, too, good sir majors
