Well, it has all the characteristics of a western, honestly. Even the music.
But a lot the film takes on the characteristics of a revenge flick, regardless of genre. Westerns, as a genre, haven't got many unique characteristics outside of location, costume, and character types. So yeah, it's a western, as much as it looks like one and that. I guess it could be seen as a post-modern Western, subverting genre conventions whilst drawing attention to itself and its content.
