Yeah, basically. They didn't have the whole "No animals were harmed" thing back then. Then again, lots of animals died during the making of The Hobbit, so there is that. But El Topo is basically 35% an animal snuff film.

Some people love it, I personally couldn't deal with the constant on-screen slaughter of animals. It's relentless. Stopped watching about an hour from the end.

No, there were a lot of actual animals that were badly looked after and ended up dying during filming (e.g. horses running off of cliffs)
