The thing is that a thread-starter can get their thread closed on request, so the mods would have had to do it regardless of sense or rationality

If it was Bardock who got it closed, as xyz implied, the mod would have given us a warning, not just closed it randomly. They would have also said why it'd been closed. Xyz probably asked them to keep it quiet on the 'why'.
