Who invented recycling? No-one in particular. As long as there have been raw materials, there has been recycling. But 23 year old Gary Anderson created the modern concept of recycling with his Mobius Loop logo, which is associated with the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' slogan.

Prior to the industrial age, you couldn't make goods quickly and cheaply, so virtually everyone practiced recycling in some form.

During the second half of the 20th century, rather than recycle in order to get the most out of the materials, Americans began to recycle in order to deal with the massive amounts of waste produced on an annual basis.

There are the three main types of recycling: mechanical, energy and chemical. Every single type is subdivided into minor categories, but understanding them gives us a better idea of how the world processes most of its recyclables.

In 2015 a truly terrifying mascot went on a mission to promote recycling in Niagara Falls (because only an alarming 4% of the city recycled), and took social media platforms of the time by storm. His name was Totes McGoats and if you do a Google image search he will haunt your dreams.
