Naval Station Pearl Harbor was established on the Hawaiian island of Oahu in 1908. Over the next ten years, the base grew. New facilities were constructed and the harbor's channels and lochs deepened to accommodate the Navy's largest ships.

Pearl Harbor quickly rose in importance after the surprise Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. Because of its location, it became one of the most important military bases in the Pacific Ocean.

The USS Arizona (BB-39) sunk at Pearl Harbor. The ship is resting on the harbor bottom. The reason that the USS Arizona was never raised from its shallow grave is that of a crack in the hull. The crack is roughly the size of a human fist but it compromises the structural integrity of the frame and would rip the ship apart it if were raised.

The USS Missouri (BB-63) is an Iowa-class battleship and was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named after the U.S. state of Missouri. Missouri was the last battleship commissioned by the United States and is best remembered as the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan, which ended World War II.
The USS Missouri was finally retired in 1992 and turned from a warship into a museum—just like the one in the movie. Today, it stays docked in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where there is no crew at the ready, nor any ammo or fuel on board.

A year and a day after the Japanese attack that launched the United States into World War II, the American Navy was on guard at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. when radar contact was made with an incoming aircraft. Fearing another attack, fighter planes were scrambled to intercept it. But instead of an attacking Japanese bomber, they encountered a ghost fighter: a pre-war American aircraft, shot to pieces, with its pilot apparently dead at the controls. It lost altitude and crashed in a field, but rescue crews found no trace of the pilot's body. It is said to be one of the strangest mysteries from the war.
