The Online Etymology Dictionary states that the term "eggnog" is an American term introduced in 1775, consisting of the words "egg" and "nog", with "nog" meaning "strong ale".

The origin of the word nog itself is derived from noggin, a name for a drinking vessel dating back to many European countries during the 1500s. The word is still used this way in modern day Scottish and Irish English.

Since liquor was thought to affect primarily the head, noggin soon became slang, referring to a head made woozy by drink. By the mid-18th century in America, noggin was popular as a boxing term, but by the 19th century it had become more generalized.

Noggin the Nog is a fictional character appearing in a TV series (of the same name, originally broadcast 1959–1965 and 1982) and a series of illustrated books (published 1965–1977), created by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin. The TV series is considered a cult classic from the golden age of British children's television. Noggin himself is the simple, kind and unassuming “King of the Northmen” in a roughly Viking-age setting, with various fantastic elements such as dragons, flying machines and talking birds.

Noggin is an actual family name and was found in both the USA, and the UK between 1880 and 1920. The most Noggin families were found in the USA in 1880 when there were 19 Noggin families living in Virginia as opposed to 8 Noggin families in the entire UK. So Virginia had the highest population of Noggins in the world!
