All you have to do is look at a picture of the beautiful Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland – an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption about 50 million years ago – to see an example of an intricate, elaborate staircase in nature.
The word “stair” in old English would be “stǣger” – a word with Germanic origins which is also related to the Dutch word “steiger”, meaning “to climb”. If we think about the word “scale”, it shares the same etymological root as the Latin word for stairs: “scala”. And stairs can also perform a “scaler” function, because the dimension of steps must always conform to the comfortable limits imposed by human gait. It is curious how we end up using variants of the word “stair”, from different language roots. In romance languages the word for “stair” can be “escalera” (Spanish), “escada” (Portuguese) or “escalier” (French), all of which have a root in the Latin plural noun “scalaria”, as documented, for example, by the roman architect Vitruvius.
One of the oldest sets of steps, some 12,000 years old, was uncovered in Gobekli Tepe, in the Anatolian region of Turkey. Ancient settlements that have been excavated, such as Mohenjo Daro in Pakistan, have stairs featured as part of the structure, and it is believed that they were built around 2500 BCE. That means that there is physical evidence of the architectural element of stairs dating back to at least 4000 years ago.
There are rules to building a set of stairs. Rule one says that rise plus run (r+R) should equal 18 inches. Why? That's what most people find to be a comfortable stride on most stairs. You can cheat a bit up or down, but below 17” and more than 19” will result in steps that require strides either too big or too small for most people.
