The United States Navy's presence in the Far East dates back to 1822. The Asiatic Fleet was founded in 1902, re-established in 1910 and resumed in 1942.

Combined, the Fleet protected American lives and interests along the Chinese coast and the Yangtze River, carrying the same diplomatic responsibilities as the Navy. The fleet also supports civilian areas ravaged by nature and internal warfare.

When the attack on Pearl Harbor pushed the United States into World War II, the Asiatic Fleet played an important role in the defense of the Philippines. Outnumbered and more powerful forces both at sea and in the air, the Fleet was joined by ships of the British, Dutch, and Australian navies against the Japanese advance through what is now Indonesia. Fleet destroyers attacked the Japanese at Balikpapan and Badung Strait, and the cruiser Marblehead fought her way through massive air raids off Bali while the submarines, running low on fuel and torpedoes, attacking Japanese supply lines.

The battle for the ‘‘Malay Fence’’ culminated in the Java Sea. During the opening hours of 1 March 1942, the American cruiser Houston and the Australian cruiser Perth, outnumbered and more powerful than the Japanese, fought to the final battle in the Sunda Strait. They come down with their guns still opened fire and was followed for several hours by the British cruiser Exeter. The remaining Allied ships were then ordered to sail for Australia.

The Asiatic fleet is no more, but a legacy of bravery and selfless dedication helped propel our Navy to victory in World War II. Since then, the 7th Fleet has carried out Asiatic Fleet missions, earned honors in Korea and Vietnam, and helped preserve peace and stability in East Asia. The men and women of our Navy services who witnessed the Cold War come to a peaceful end and win Operation Desert Storm are worthy descendants of sailors and Marines who have won glory before all Americans to join me in welcoming a proud legacy of bravery and respect.
