The history of stilts goes back thousands of years—all the way to the 6th century B.C.E. In the Landes region of France, shepherds used tchangues (English: “big legs”) made of wood. These stilts were around five feet tall and helped the shepherds move more easily over the area's marshy ground.

Mocko Jumbie dancing (or stilt dancing) is thought to have originated in West Africa. The art was brought to several Caribbean islands over 200 years ago and remains a traditional symbol of cultural celebrations and heritage. There are a few variations of what the term "Mocko Jumbie" means.

People have been building homes on stilts since prehistoric times, and examples of stilt homes can be found all over the world. Elevating a home can protect against flooding and maintain a vermin-free living space, which is why stilt homes are particularly well-suited to subtropical and coastal regions.

On 15 November 2006 Saimaiti Yiming of China took 10 steps on 16.41 m-high (53.8 ft) stilts to break the Guinness World Record for walking on the tallest stilts.

Stilt-Man first debuted in Daredevil #8 (June 1965) and has become an antagonist for the street-level heroes, Daredevil and Spider-Man, and most recently appeared as a foe to Iron Man. Wilbur Day was a scientist who was employed by Carl Kaxton, who invented a hydraulic ram device. Wilbur stole Kaxton's designs and used them to engineer a pair of extremely long, telescopic metal legs, which allowed him to tower high over the ground as the super villain called Stilt-Man.
