The term pack rat comes from the bushy-tailed woodrat, a rodent known for dragging just about anything and everything off to its nest. Calling a person a pack rat dates from the 1880s. You probably know someone who has a tendency to accumulate lot of stuff.

Pack rats are distinguishable from regular rats because they have a hairy tail (rather than scaly tail), as well as soft, fine fur and large ears. Their clean appearance, soft fur and well-haired ears help distinguish this species from regular rats.

Pack rats are attracted to small, bright, shiny objects, citrus fruit, fecal matter from other animals, pet food, Cholla cacti, Prickly Pear debris, Mesquite tree beans, fiberglass insulation and trash.

Up to four feet across, pack rat nests are large structures resembling beaver dams and are constructed of branches, twigs, and plant material. A midden is another part of a pack rat's nest. It's built from feces and urine and used to store the shiny objects they pick up in their travels.

Pack rats damage and destroy landscaping from nesting and feeding. Offspring seek nesting opportunities in cars, pool equipment and even get in to the ceiling voids of homes. They're avid chewers, often chewing on and through wires in cars, attics, spas and pool heaters. On the flipside, they not only help aerate soil, but their poop even helps fertilize any planted seeds! Additionally, packrats are food for bobcats, coyotes, owls, hawks and snakes. Those animals rely on these fuzzy furballs for a full belly.
