You can see the proof of his dementia when Luke met up with him the first time when
the Sand People attacked and Obi Wan drove them away, Luke mentions R2D2 as his
droid and Obi Wan replies "I don’t seem to remember ever owning a droid." Meanwhile R2 got Obi Wan and Anakin out of danger more times than anyone.

Yep, he says so himself "You have to come with me to Alderaan, I'm getting to old for this sort of thing." And that's why their lightsaber fight on the Death Star was so pitiful, he forgot how to laser sword and Vader who was mostly mechanical at that point was awkward at it.
Luke is still learning techniques, he's good at lightsaber duels because of his strong force abilities, but he's fighting Vader someone with leagues more Dark Force ability and experience taught to him by the Emperor, notice Luke was better with the lightsaber but Vader was tossing big heavy shit at him.
1st of all, the emperor didn't care much for lightsabers,
2nd of all, Vader could have killed him but wanted him to join the dark side.
3rd of all, Luke was trained by Yoda to learn that power, ie, the dark side, isn't stronger and humility is stronger in the greater scheme of things, which is why Leia saved him when he could have died...
1- The Emperor trained Vader in dark force techniques not lightsabers, Anakin already knew that shit from being in the Clone Wars with Obi Wan.
2- Vader was never for sure that he could turn Luke, he was willing to kill him hence taking his hand at Bespin and letting him jump into the tunnel thing.
3- Yoda was pissed because Luke left before his training was complete even Obi Wan was against the idea because he knew Luke wasn't ready.

Obi-wan was shit in the phantom menace.
I thought it should have been Samuel L. Jackson and Liam Neeson would have to deal with some shit involving space taxes and Ewen McGregor was a weirdo who just happened to be in a bad place and had to deal with space politics that involved him in the art of the jedi.
So he had to get taught by Yoda and train Anakin, poorly, and Mace and Qui-Gon died and he had to train some orphan and that would be his story.
Unfortunately, it wasn't portrayed that way and they had to keep making excuses like Dexter Jettser and Clone wars and Genral Grevois?
