That's an interesting theory, but I believe it's actually the result of increased brain activity during REM sleep.

something you desire
Freud believed that the dream's primary function was wish fulfillment. He thought that dreams were brought about by a person wanting something, and in order to fulfill that want, they dreamt about it in order to somehow subconsciously fulfill this want. For example, a sexually frustrated person would probably have very sexual dreams, or a poor person might have dreams of extreme wealth.
I don't believe this theory, however. I lean towards more of a biological approach. There is a theory that dreams are merely the by-product of sudden bursts of activity coming from the lower areas of the brain. When you are in a deep sleep, you eventually fall into REM sleep. When in REM sleep, brain waves begin to act in the way that they would when a person is wide awake. Once this burst of activity is triggered during REM sleep, there are neurons that send random signals to the cortex from the lower brain. Theoretically, the cortex will then take these random signals and try to make sense of them, creating a dream.
I know it’s just a theory, but it makes the most sense, so that’s what I’m going with.
