Last week, I wrote a column praising Eddie Guerrero, and calling him Smackdown’s MVP for 2005. In response, I got loads of e-mails with fans sharing equal praise of Latino Heat. From the e-mails, I noticed one big problem with Eddie Guerrero – it’s really hard not to like him.
That applies not only to him as a human being, but also directly to the character he portrays. With loads of charisma and in-ring talent, it’s impossible not to be entertained by Guerrero, and when given any opportunity to cheer for him, fans jump on the chance. For example, in the summer of 2003, Guerrero tried to turn heel. He was teaming with Tajiri at the time, and when upset with him, dumped Tajiri onto the roof of his low rider, busting his back open and leaving Tajiri laying in a pool of blood. The next week, Guerrero came out to the crowd to try to explain his dastardly actions. The crowd didn’t care. Guerrero could hardly finish his sentences, as the crowd was overwhelmingly positive towards him. Within a month or two, WWE gave up on the heel turn, and Guerrero went on to a great face run that culminated in him becoming WWE Champion.
