Because in that time period, comics from both companies made little sense. They were essentially cartoon characters and capable of... whatever. That's why I think it's messed up when people try to pull the "There was no Marvel Crisis!" No, but there was a point when they realised how ****ed up they were getting and went about a method of correcting it and making a more realistic story similar to DC... there's just no defining moment for it.
