What exactly happened to Hulk that he turned back?

They partially mesmerized him into seeing Betty and he resisted the Serpent, breaking part of his hammer thereby cutting the connection. Doesn't make much sense as the real Betty tried and failed but whatever. The writer probably wrote himself into a corner.

I can't say for sure without double checking but I don't remember anything like that happening. General Ross does say that they built Hulk a statue out of Adamantium in the main event issues though.
