Was Thanos return from the crumbled universe explained? Or was Avengers Assamble not canon?

Never explained, to the best of my knowledge.

Carver swears its canon, though.

It's canon, it's part of the AoU crossover in the solicits.

There has been no attempt to explain how Thanos and Starlord escaped the Cancerverse. Thank you Bendis for ruining one of the best last stands in the Genre.

Star-Lord and Nova's end was so epic...I agree...was a shame to see him come back with NO explanation whatsover
