He's just following up on an idea an X-Men comic promoted wherein the combined powers of a bunch of omega and non-omega mutants(Franklin Richards was intended to be part of this group, but was eventually excluded) was considered to be enough for Apocalypse to beat the coming Host of Celestials.

We'll find out next issue, but yea, probably. Gaea is an Elder Goddess and the mother of creation. Being her direct off-spring should probably have crazy side-effects.

Aaron has already brought up Thor's connection to Gaea so he's aware of the bond Thor has to the elements and life:
