Scot, get Gimp if you don't already have it. It can do 80-90% of what Photoshop can, but for free. Although, absed on that texture in your sig's background, you may have it already. I seem to remember creating something similar years ago when I was a fledgling signature maker.

Yeah I've had GIMP for quite a bit but never used it. I was planning to edit skins and colours of characters armour in Total War games but never got round to using it. Edited like 1 character then never used it. I'll be sure to use it now though.
I only managed to make that sig as I was round my nans and luckily my Grandad had randomly installed a Creative Cloud trial that had CS6 on it. So I managed to make that sig today before the trial ran out.

Tbh, CS6 has a ton of bells and whistles on it that you'll never use in a million years as a hobby-level signature maker. Gimp can be great for simple purposes.
The Signature Forum here has been dead for years, but it used to be a great place to learn. The resource thread may have some good stuff still: http://www.killermovies.com/forums/f76/t388403.html. If not, some of the individual threads may still be good for inspiration.
But a Google search for Gimp tutorials and/or tips will likely be the quickest route. I wasn't great, but I got to be a pretty good sig maker in Gimp, and it was all self-taught with the occasional tutorial and/or advice from a member. Took me several months to develop any competency, but it's certainly doable.
