I remember reading an interview by the dude who wrote fear agent, his name escapes me at the moment. Anyway, he wrote an issue of Thunderbolts with iron fist becoming mind controlled. He was asked about why he wrote Danny in his classic costume etc. His answer was something like, "I don't know what other writers are doing with the character, but this is how I envision him so this is what I wrote". Then he writes Mr X with "telepathy" as his power instead of subconscious psionc mapping/reaction of his opponents nervous system and subsequent movements.
He did the exact same thing with Psylocke in the XFactor books with her telepathy and telekinesis.
